Charles William Rutherford, age 90, of Newburgh, IN, passed away at St. Vincent Hospital in the care of Heart to Heart Hospice on July 26, 2025, with family by his side.
He was born in Cannelton, IN, one of six children, and lived a life defined by kindness, humility, and service.
Charlie was a proud U.S. Navy veteran serving with honor and dedication. He graduated from Brescia College and became a Certified Public Accountant, retiring from Gaither Rutherford & CO in 2005. He was widely respected for his honesty, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to his clients and colleagues. Following retirement, he and Mary Sam enjoyed traveling, especially riverboat cruises with friends. He was an avid reader and enjoyed many card games with his buddies.
As a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Newburgh, he served in various roles throughout his life. He was a past member of the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, and a board member of the Warrick County Council on Aging. He was also an enthusiastic fan of Indiana University basketball and a cradle to grave New York Yankees fan.
Charlie was a family man to his core and will be remembered for his gentle spirit and kind heart. His quiet strength and loving nature touched all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Mary Sam; sons Christopher of Newburgh and Matthew, PhD, daughter-in-law April, grandchildren Bonnie and Charlie of Stillwater, OK; sisters Carolyn and Mildred and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Harold, Steven, and Michael.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 625 Frame Rd, Newburgh, IN, 47630, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will take place at St. John’s Mausoleum with full military rites.
