Charles Robert Willis

April 3, 1940 — May 14, 2023

Charles R. Willis, of Evansville, IN, died Sunday, May 14th at North Park Nursing Center where he lived his last 7 years.  Until COVID restrictions, he read aloud to other residents in the activity room a few days a week.  During the last year his vision and hearing had declined significantly, but he still enjoyed radio broadcasts of St. Louis Cardinals baseball games.  His religion was important in his life and he also enjoyed radio broadcasts of church services and religious speakers.
Charlie enjoyed music and studied cello and played in orchestras in Evansville public schools and Evansville College.  After graduation he worked for the United States Postal Service and continued there  his entire career.  He often enjoyed helping other employees to memorize postal route information.  He liked to write fiction and self-published many books.  He was always especially interested in stories about unsolved mysteries and wrote books about Jack the Ripper as well as the Hatfields and the McCoys.
As a young man he often led hymn singing in his church.  In more recent years he attended Oak Hill Church of Christ.  There he met his wife Sara, now deceased.  He was her primary care-giver in her last years.
Family survivors include his sister-in-law Cindy, his niece Erika Higgins and her family, and his nephews, Bill Willis and Bryan Willis and their families.  Cindy will always remember his sense of humor and how his face lit up during baseball discussions.  His nieces and nephews fondly remember Uncle Charlie telling ghost stories and playing games with them.
