It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Deron Jay Cowan announce his passing peacefully into the loving arms of his Savior on June 21, 2026.
Deron (DJ) was born in Plattsburgh. New York on July 13, 1961, to James R. Cowan and Jeanne Ball Cowan. Deron spent his formative years in Pomona, NY, graduating from Ramapo High School in 1980. Deron continued his education at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky receiving both undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Upon graduation Deron was commissioned into The United States Army for two years and continued to serve in the National Guard both in New York State; as well as in Kentucky, attaining the rank of Captain. Deron’s career of thirty plus years were spent primarily with Zurich N.A., with whom he oversaw construction sites throughout the United States and the world as a risk engineer.
Deron was an avid reader of military history and history in general. He loved traveling throughout the world to visit historic sites, battlegrounds and architectural marvels, especially bridges. Friends and family from far and near loved to join Deron, and his wife, Rosemary, in their home for one of Deron’s delightful culinary meals. From an early age he loved to cook, create and to entertain.
Deron and Rosemary lived for several years in Newburgh, Indiana where they were active members of The St. Andrew’s Society, participating in many Highland Games; as well as hosting social events throughout the years.
Deron was pre-deceased by his parents, James and Jeanne and by his brother, Richard Chris. He leaves behind his beloved wife of thirty-four years, Rosemary Hannan Cowan; two faithful pups, Jake and Beau; a sister, Teresa Lucas; an aunt, Patsy Greer; numerous beloved in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews who loved him dearly for his kindness, understanding and sincerity.
Deron leaves behind many dear friends from throughout his life, especially, the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity brothers from Murray State, loving friends and neighbors from Newburgh, Indiana and newly acquired friends from Fernandina Beach, Florida.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Titzer Family Funeral Homes Simpson Chapel 510 W Jennings St Newburgh IN on Friday, July 10, 2026. Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and followed by service at 1 p.m.
Private burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Providence, Kentucky on July 11th.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: PAWS No Kill Animal Rescue/ Newburgh, or to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
