Gene L. Shekell, 88, passed away on May 1st, 2024, surrounded by his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and strength that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Gene was born on February 1, 1936 in Newburgh, Indiana to the late Nolan and Mary Shekell. He was a lifelong Newburgh resident and a home builder known for his craftsmanship and commitment to excellence that will forever resonate in the homes he built.
Gene touched the lives of many with the unique projects he built in his workshop. He and Kay also found immense joy in attending the grandchildren's sports events and band competitions. In addition to his workshop and family activities, Gene enjoyed playing golf, deer hunting, archery, travel, camping, IU basketball and entertaining friends with his stories. Gene served on the board of directors for Rose Hill Cemetery and was a charter member of Blackhawk Bowmen.
Gene will be deeply missed by his wife of 68 years, Kay; daughters Robin (Kim) Stevens and Sara (Kary) Kiefer; grandchildren Nicholas (Jessica) Stevens, Adam (Marlee) Kiefer, Ryan (Kelsey) Kiefer; grandson-in-law Nick Sako; great grandchildren Gwendolen Sako, Kaleb and Bentley Stevens, Max and Charlie Kiefer, Lucy and Penelope Kiefer; niece, nephew, cousins and many, many friends. His memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Joan Held and his granddaughter Kelli Sako.
Visitation will be held on May 14, 2024 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Titzer Family Funeral Home, Simpson Chapel, 510 W. Jennings St. Newburgh, IN 47630. Inurnment will be at a later date in Rose Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Warrick Co. Humane Society, New Building Fund, 5722 Vann Rd, Newburgh, IN 47630.
Though he may be gone from our sight, Gene will live on in the memories we hold dear. May he rest in eternal peace.
