George Louis Spohr, 37, of Newburgh, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018, at his home surrounded by family. He was born July 13, 1981, in Brooklyn, New York, to George Edward and Linda Louise (Powierski) Spohr.
He was executive editor of the Evansville Courier & Press and regional editor for Gannett's Indiana newspapers outside of Indianapolis, leading journalism efforts in Lafayette, Richmond, Muncie and Evansville, as well as at The Gleaner in Henderson, Kentucky.
He moved to Newburgh in October 2017 and was previously executive editor of the Journal & Courier in Lafayette.
He was Gannett's youngest executive editor in the country and was known for finding his staff's hidden skills and encouraging their professional growth, as well as his ability to organize and fine-tune newsroom operations.

George was an avid hiker, loved Lincoln State Park and it's fire tower and enjoyed New Harmony State Park's trails.  He also loved flying and aspired to be a pilot.
He is survived by his parents, George and Linda Spohr of Deerfield, NY; sister and brother-in-law, Kristen Spohr-Fulmer and Shawn Fulmer of Utica, NY; and two nephews, Alexander and Wesley Fulmer of Utica, NY.
His family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. A. Stevens and the nurses and staff at Oncology Hematology Associates for their kindness and compassion.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Prayers will begin at 8:45 a.m. EST Saturday at Heintz Funeral Home then continue for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. EST, Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1206 Lincoln Ave. Utica, NY.  Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica, NY.  Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. EST. Friday, July 27, 2018 at Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd. in Utica, NY, 13502.

All services will be in New York.
