Helen (Ebe) Elizabeth Shackelford, 83 passed away October 21, 2013. She was a remarkable mother, grandmother and great grandmother with a soft voice, warm smile and loving heart. She was everything home should be and loved dearly by her family. She was born November 5, 1928 in Newburgh, Indiana the daughter of Adam and Clara (Broshears) Hahn. She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James (Bud) Shackelford, III, her parents, her brother, Durwood Hahn and sister, Margie McCarty. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James L IV and Diane Shackelford of Farmington, NM, a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Mark Hillyard of NC: five granddaughters: Heather (Jason) Nickel of MO: Ashley (Nick) Nanninga of Newburgh: Kathryn Shackelford of IL: Amanda Hillyard of NC and Annie (Andrew) Simpson of Owensville: two great-grandsons, Nathan Nanninga and Lucas Nickel: two great-granddaughter, Charlotte Nanninga and Zoe Nickel. Helen grew up in Newburgh, Indiana. She graduated from Newburgh High School, Lockyear College and was a member of Sigma Alpha Sorority. She married Bud on September 19, 1950 and they immediately left for Fort Carson in Colorado Springs where she worked as a stenographer at the Air Defense Command until Bud’s discharge from the military. They relocated back to Newburgh in November 1951. During her career she enjoyed a close relationship with the Daughter of Charity sisters while administering their accounts at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She also worked with Bud at Midwest Personnel, Inc. as the bookkeeper, until their retirement. She was an avid Aces fan, enjoyed archery and any type of needlework or sewing. She was a Charter member of the Newburgh Rainbow Girls and actively participated in Rainbow Girls and DeMolay Boys while her children were members. Helen was room mother, PTA popcorn lady and all around passionate cheerleader and supporter of her husband, children and grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Titzer Family Funeral Homes~Simpson Chapel, 510 West Jennings Street Newburgh, IN (812)853-8314. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to service time on Saturday, November 2, at the funeral home. Memorial gift may be given in lieu of flowers in Helen’s name to Warrick County Humane Society.
