Services: on Saturday, September 24, 2022,at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Church of Buckskin, 8260 E 900 S, Buckskin, IN 47647 and burial to follow at the church cemetery.

John C. Gill, age 96, passed from this life on September 13, 2022 to be with his departed wife of 70 years, Carolyn. Carolyn passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 16, 2021.Born April 13, 1926 in Princeton, Ky, he was the son of John Albert (1874 – 1958) and Eunice (Bennett) (1884 – 1958) Gill and was the second youngest of 10 children all of whom preceded him in death; James, Robert, Ed, Evert, Hazel Nation, Dorothy Greer, Mary Bardwell, Sarah Ann Lynn, and Catherine Louise Kohlmeyer.

As a boy, John worked on the family farm and lumber mill. When John was 18 in 1944, he enlisted in the Navy. After completing basic training at Paris Island, he served his tour of duty on the U.S.S. Arcturus. He shipped out from Chester PA and sailed through the Panama Canal quickly experiencing action in the Battle of Okinawa. The Arcturus visited many other notable ports in the Asia Pacific before returning state side in December of 1945. John moved to the Elberfeld IN area some time after the war and married Carolyn F. Besing on October 21, 1950. He worked in several short term jobs before working at International Harvester as a machinist.

John was a master mechanic. After Harvester, he utilized his knowledge of industrial electronics, hydraulics, pipe fitting, HVAC, machining, and construction in a 34 year career as Maintenance Supervisor at Evansville Veneer and Lumber (Kimball International).He retired at age 65 in 1991. John was an avid outdoorsman. He spent countless hours teaching the arts of hunting and fishing to his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and anyone else that would share time with him.

His favorite vacation spot was Kentucky Lake. Having grown up in the area, he knew the area before the lake was created. During camping and fishing trips, he would recall underwater features from before the lake was constructed and was able to find many of them, by boat, before the age of sonar.

He is survived by his daughter Treva Miller, son Mark, daughter Susan Barclay, son John, 6 grand children and 8 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022,at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Church of Buckskin, 8260 E 900 S, Buckskin, IN 47647 and burial to follow at the church ­­cemetery. 

A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2022 at Titzer Family Funeral Homes, Volkman Chapel, 2nd & Elm St. Elberfeld, IN (812) 983-4211 and beginning at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Church of Buckskin until the time of service.
