Joseph B. Schmidt of Columbus, OH, formerly of Newburgh, Ind., passed away on Thursday, December 5th, 2014 at 3:40PM. He was born September 1st, 1922 in Newburgh, IN to George and Clara (Brumley) Schmidt. He married the love of his life, Imogene Richardson, on November 24th, 1949. Known to friends and family as "Joe", he was a devoted military man, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Joe began his military career on September 16th, 1940 when he volunteered to serve his country as a member of the Army Air Corp. During his 21 years of service he held many challenging assignments. He served as an air traffic controller in Berlin during the Berlin Air Lift, served in the Azores islands in a unit that helped disabled planes get to safety and served with the Strategic Air Command at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. He received 15 metals of honor including 2 Bronze Stars. He retired at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and went on to work as an air traffic controller until his retirement from the FAA at Port Columbus in 1977. Preceded in death by devoted wife of 63 years, Imogene; two sisters and five brothers, he is survived by brother Robert and sister Mary Schmidt; and sister-in-law Doris Schmidt of Newburgh. He is survived by four children Linda Shirk, Bob (Doris) Schmidt, Mary Ann (Jim) Mogan, and Joe Schmidt; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 625 Frame Rd., Newburgh, Ind. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery with full Military Rites. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, at Titzer Family Funeral, Newburgh Chapel, 510 W.
