Sara Louise Cooper Shigley, 75, passed away Sunday, March 30th, 2014, 8:00 a.m., at the VNA Hospice Center. Sara was the oldest of 4 children, born July 13, 1938 to Dr. and Mrs. Herbert Press Cooper of Clemson, SC. She attended Clemson University, and completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics at the University of Evansville. At a later date, she obtained a teaching certificate from the University of Southern Indiana. Sara was an outstanding student, had a thirst for knowledge and loved to read. She worked as a social worker in Warrick County, taught at Good Shepherd school, and worked for Harding & Shymanski during tax season. She retired from George Koch and Sons, where she worked as a manager in purchasing and logistics. Sara met her husband, Don Shigley, at Clemson University, and married at the age of 18. Upon Don's graduation, they moved to Evansville where he was employed at Whirlpool and started their family. They eventually moved to Elberfeld to raise their children in the country. After retirement they moved to Oak Meadow Country Club where they became avid golfers. They also enjoyed dancing, traveling and numerous other activities. After the passing of her husband in 1999, she cared for Don's mother, Ann Shigley. To keep active, she became a docent of the Evansville Museum, was a member of Master Gardener's and Newcomers Club. Sara also loved going to the Evansville Philharmonic and spent time playing Canasta and Mah Jung with friends. Emotion is something Sara rarely showed, but she let everyone know how much she loved her family and how very proud she was of each in their achievements. Sara's faithful companion, Popeye (miniature dachshund) was at her bedside to the end. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Shigley, in 1999 and her parents, Dr. Herbert Press Cooper and Sara Louise Cooper. Sara is survived by brothers, Dr. Herbert Press Cooper, Jr. (Traudl), Thomas Cooper and sister, Mary Adcock (Basil). Sons, Donald Shigley, Jr. (Dara), Ray Shigley (Sharon), James Shigley (Kellie) and daughter, Ruth Shigley. She was also loved by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Friday, April 4, 2014, at Zion United Church of Christ, 165 Elm Street, Elberfeld, Ind., officiated by Pastor Janet Buente, assisted by Rev. Glen Flowers.
