Sue J. Morrison, 73, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at the J. W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV. She was born March 16, 1950, to Harry E. and Mildred (McCutchan) Thompson in Evansville, Indiana. Sue was the co-founder and owner (along with her father Harry) of Sunburst Stained Glass Co. which operated in New Harmony from 1977-1981 before finding its home as part of the downtown Newburgh small business community from 1981 until her retirement in 2014.
Sue graduated from North High School in 1968 before attending the University of Evansville where she received a Masters in Special Education in 1974. She was also in the inaugural class of the university’s Harlaxton campus in Grantham, England, in 1971.
Sue’s Sunburst Stained Glass Co. curated massive window, chandelier, and specialized restorations in such venues as the West Baden Springs Hotel (French Lick Resort), Evansville’s Victory Theatre, First Presbyterian Church, Blue Grass Church, Deaconess Gateway, Old Post Office, Visiting Nurses Association Hospice Center, and the University of Evansville along with countless others in and beyond the tri-state area. Sue also designed and created custom works that now reside in homes as far away as England, Germany, Hawaii, New York, and Alaska.
During her life she was a special education teacher in the Mt. Vernon school system, award-winning equestrian, painter and visual artist, recording musician, member of the Sweet Adeline’s, avid hiker, activist, and community leader.
She served on many boards including the Arts Council of Southern Indiana and the Newburgh Historic Preservation Commission. She served as a leader, mentor, and secretary in Al-Anon for over 30 years and generously shared her experience, strength, and hope with others.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Mildred Thompson, and brother-in-law, Richard Azwell. She is survived by her husband, William Morrison; daughter, Mary Colvin (Rosalie Burke); bonus daughter, Ginger Patton (Jimmy); sisters, Elaine Azwell, Jane Johansen (Nils); nieces, Linda Azwell, Paige McFarling (Douglas), Ansley McFarling, Rowan McFarling, Emmeline McFarling; nephew, John Azwell (Judy); aunt, Louella Wright; and many friends and extended family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4 P.M., Saturday, August 19, 2023, at Patchwork Central, 100 Washington Ave., Evansville IN. 47713. Visitation to begin 2:30 pm. Celebration 4-7 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Thomas C. Fiddick Memorial Lecture Fund (Office of University Advancement, University of Evansville • evansville.edu), the Indiana Horse Rescue (IndianaHorseRescue.org), and Planned Parenthood (plannedparenthood.org).
