Walter Russell Sanders

Walter Russell Sanders of Evansville Indiana passed away at the age of 102 years Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Brickyard Woodlands Care Center in Newburgh, Indiana.

Walter was born September 18,1923, in Evansville, Indiana to his parents Walter and Grace (O’Bryan) Sanders.

He graduated from Central High School, The Dale Carnegie Institute, and Lockyear Business College where he earned a degree in Business. Walter also attended Evansville College.

Ever the entrepreneur and inventive thinker, Walter owned and operated an independent grocery store near downtown Evansville early in his career. His customers knew they would always be treated kindly, honestly and with humor at “Sandy’s Market.” He enjoyed spending time with his father-in-law, Joseph Voigt, his meat cutter, who had previously owned his own grocery store in downtown Evansville in the 1940’s named the Steamboat Meat Market.

Walter began his next phase of life in the dairy industry as a milkman for Evansville’s Ideal American Dairy, where he serviced both corporate accounts and residential customers. He retired in 1985.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wives Dorothy Voigt Sanders and Elizabeth Fraser Sanders, his brother Charles Vernon Sanders of Laurel, Mississippi, and his sons David and Jeff Sanders.

Walter is survived by his four daughters: Toni Adkins, Nina Lientz, Kara Reed, and Lisa Vonderhaar, and his entire family including his grandchildren and new great- grandchild.

He was a man of deep, devout faith and was studying scripture up until a few days before his death. He loved spending time with his family and friends and always had stories to tell anyone who would listen.
